At the entrance to the gorge stands a small wayside shrine with a statue of Mary. Such wayside monuments have characterized the villages in Posočje for centuries: donated by local families as thanks, as a plea for protection for the path and farm, or in memory of the deceased. Around Tolmin, where the Isonzo Front ran during World War I, many of these sites also bear silent testimony to the fallen. A brief moment of peace before the roar of the water in the gorge.
