Ardan Wood is a particularly interesting horseshoe of ancient woodland - it was the first reserve owned by the Native Woodland Trust and has been preserved for over 350 years. The age of the woodland mean that trees and the understory are very well established. The wood is predominantly oak with a wide variety of other trees, shrubs and mosses. The woodland habitat supports red squirrels and lots of other animals, birds and insects.
