Embark on a difficult 14.2-mile (22.9 km) hike along the South West Coast Path, offering dramatic coastal scenery between Trebarwith Strand and Port Isaac. This route is known for its strenuous terrain, featuring steep descents into valleys and tough climbs back up to cliff tops, navigating at least seven valleys. You will gain 1923 feet (586 metres) in elevation over approximately 8 hours and 2 minutes, making it a demanding day out. Expect rough, loose paths and magnificent sea views throughout, with panoramic perspectives from points like Dennis Point. You might spot wildlife such as skylarks and butterflies, and in summer, the hillsides are covered in soft grass and white clover. The path takes you past isolated spots like Backways Cove and the stunning Trebarwith Sands.
This challenging out-and-back trail requires a good level of fitness; it is not a casual stroll. Consider starting early to allow ample time to complete the full 8-hour and 2-minute journey, or plan for an overnight stay to break up the distance. Both Trebarwith Strand, your starting point, and Port Isaac, your destination, offer amenities like pubs, cafes, and restaurants where you can refuel. Be prepared for varied terrain, including sections that can be rough, loose, or overgrown.
This section is celebrated as one of Cornwall's finest parts of the South West Coast Path, falling within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As you hike, you will see remnants of past industries, such as slate quarry buildings and old donkey tracks around Backway's Cove. The picturesque fishing village of Port Isaac, famous as "Portwenn" from the TV series Doc Martin, awaits you at the turnaround point. This trail offers a chance to experience the natural beauty and charm of Cornwall's north coast.
