    Hiking

With its waterside location, The Cunning Man is the ideal destination for a walk along the Kennet & Avon Canal. Plus, despite being so close to Reading, it has the air of a country pub. It takes its name from the story of a local man who was considered a wizard.

Linear Park, Holy Brook & The Kennet & Avon Canal loop from Calcot

Embark on a moderate hike through the Linear Park, Holy Brook & The Kennet & Avon Canal loop from Calcot, covering 6.1 miles (9.9 km) with a gentle elevation gain of 63 feet (19 metres). This route typically takes around 2 hours and 29 minutes to complete, offering a blend of natural beauty and industrial heritage. You will follow the tranquil Kennet & Avon Canal towpath, passing historic locks like Fobney Lock, and traverse the varied landscapes of Holybrook Linear Park, which features woodlands, river basins, and meadow grasslands.

When planning your visit, be aware that while much of the path is flat, certain sections along the canalside towpath may not be suitable for wheelchairs or strollers due to canal crossings. The towpath can also become muddy in winter or after wet weather, and may even flood at times, which could increase the difficulty of your hike. Holybrook Linear Park itself offers various access points for pedestrians and cyclists, making it easy to join the trail.

This loop is notable for its diverse scenery, transitioning from more urban canal-side developments to rural stretches where you might even spot grazing cows. A highlight is Fobney Island Wetland Nature Reserve, a restored area designed to attract local wildlife such as birds, bats, and water voles, and featuring wetlands, wildflower meadows, and reed beds. The Kennet & Avon Canal itself boasts significant industrial heritage, including the historic Fobney Lock built between 1718 and 1723, and a Victorian Pump House near it.
