The Savage Alpine Trail in Denali National Park offers a journey through varied terrain, from dense forest and boggy meadows to exposed alpine tundra. This 4.5-mile (7.3 km) hike involves 1302 feet (397 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 2 hours and 31 minutes. You can access the trail by personal vehicle or the complimentary Savage River Shuttle, which connects the Savage River and Mountain Vista Picnic Area trailheads. Be prepared for potential wildlife encounters, as caribou, Dall sheep, and even grizzly bears are known to frequent the area.
Considered one of the best front-country hikes in Denali, the Savage Alpine Trail is particularly stunning in late August and mid-September when the fall foliage transforms the landscape. It offers a unique opportunity to experience the park's rugged beauty and diverse ecosystems, providing genuinely great views that are earned on foot.
