If you want to cycle along the German Baltic Sea coast, you should actually visit this place. Because here, at this boundary stone, it begins. With the wooden bridge, the boats in the harbor and the waterfowl on the nearby shore, it is also a nice place to take a break.

Dr. Großheim Memorial Stone

Highlight • Monument

Großheim earned particular merit with his commitment to preserving the Kollund Forest. Großheim really wanted to preserve this forest for local recreation for the people of Flensburg. When in the 1870s the then private owners wanted to cut down the forest in order to instead sell land for villas on the northern bank of the Flensburg Fjord, he founded what was probably Flensburg's first citizens' initiative, the “Comité for the purchase of the forested terrain in Collund intended for deforestation “. The mayor and later mayor Wilhelm Toosbüy was a fellow campaigner.[2] Citizens and the city each gave 2,000 thalers to purchase it and thus save the forest. A large part of the Kollund Forest came into the possession of the city of Flensburg in 1879.

After the First World War, Prussia had to cede Northern Schleswig to Denmark due to the referendum in Schleswig in 1920. The city of Flensburg remained the owner of the Kollund Forest even after the new boundaries were drawn. In 2006, the city sold the forest to a Danish forester on the condition that the forest would continue to be preserved and open to the public. The forest has belonged to the Danske Naturfond since October 2017.[3]
On today's Gendarmstien hiking trail in the Kollunder Forest there is a simple granite stone with the inscription “In memory of Dr. E. Großheim. 1883”.
