Eiderdamm South

Highlight • Monument

The Eiderdamm is located in the Eider estuary between North Friesland and Dithmarschen and is divided into north and south areas by the Eider barrage. It is the largest coastal protection structure in Germany. In the years 2019 to 2020 the dam was rehabilitated on behalf of the state coastal protection agency SH. In the course of the construction work, the southern part of the dyke was rebuilt over a length of 1,100 m using asphalt mastic construction, the dyke was raised by approx. 30 cm and the dyke crest widened to 4.00 m. The outer embankment was made flatter so that the waves that run up lose a large part of their power during high water phases and the dyke survives these phases better. The dike has also been converted into a so-called climate dike. Due to the widened dyke crest, it is possible to raise the dyke without great effort if the sea level continues to rise in the next few years.

Eider Barrage & Lock

Highlight (Segment) • Monument

Imposing structure with high dykes that serve as a bulwark against the storm surges of the North Sea. On the inland side, the wide estuary of the Eider extends to Tönning. When the tide is low, large mudflats are created on which numerous birds seek their food.
