San Giorgio Square, Melpignano

Highlight • Historical Site

In the center of Melpignano, Piazza San Giorgio is named after the patron saint of the city. The mother church of the same name overlooks it and has a portico that is quite rare in Puglia. It is one of the places where the famous popular music event called "Notte della Taranta" takes place.

In neglect for decades, the convent has undergone some restoration works, and is currently used to host cultural activities. The cloister of 1644 preserves the remains of a highly decorated colonnade, bearing many Latin engravings, and a well on which the double-headed eagle is sculpted, a sign of the presence of the noble Castriota Scanderbeg family.

Raimondello’s Spire

Highlight • Monument

Built in 1397 at the behest of the prince of Taranto Raimondo Orsini Del Balzo, it's one of the Gothic masterpieces in the lands of Otranto. Returning from the Holy Land in 1380, he militarily occupied the county of Soleto. The spire from the top of its 40 meters (+91 of Soleto above the sea level), optically represents the connection between the Adriatic and the Ionian seas, symbolizing not only the power of the Orsini Del Balzo family, but also the affirmation of the papal hegemony in a period of transition from the secular Byzantine influence to that of the Roman church.
It's a very slender square tower divided into five orders. The base floor and the first order have no windows and incorporate a previous tower inside them. The second and third orders are richly decorated with four finely carved mullioned windows in Lecce stone. The last order of octagonal shape has eight mullioned windows, is covered by an ogival dome covered with colored majolica and rests on a finely worked balustrade. All the mullioned windows and the corners of the upper floors are full of griffins, lions and anthropomorphic masks.
