We couldn't do the whole loop because the last section is a category A canonical nature reserve. This means that you can only enter between October and February.

Calm and peaceful, the Alte Aare rejoins its new course.
A wonderful place, a beautiful bridge to walk across, suspended over the water. Beautiful.

Büren Wooden Bridge

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

The current wooden bridge was only inaugurated in 1991. Its predecessor fell victim to an arson attack on April 5, 1989. The arsonists were never caught, but they were attributed to the Jura separatists. An arson attack on the bridge had already been carried out in 1987, at that time by the "New Jura Liberation Front".

Büren's landmark has had supra-regional significance for centuries. The 108-meter-long Aare crossing has connected the town with the district of Reiben (belonged to Büren since 1911) since 1275.

The bridge in Büren an der Aare burned down as early as 1798. During a hasty retreat from Napoleon's troops, the locals set fire to it themselves.

During the internment of the French Bourbaki army in 1871 (Franco-Prussian War), it even served as a stable. At that time, over 100 horses and mules were crammed together.

Büren an der Aare is located - as the name suggests - on the river Aare. Büren was founded in the 12th century by the Barons of Strassberg.
Only a few medieval settlements have been able to preserve their historical appearance as intact over the centuries as Büren an der Aare. There is a lot to see, including fascinating handicrafts in various studios and, of course, the famous wooden bridge.
