St. Anthony's Chapel, Salphen

Highlight • Religious Site

This chapel dates back to 1626 and was founded when the plague raged through the region. People who died of the disease were not allowed to be buried in the provided cemetery and were buried here in the forest. A resident from Salphen who lost some children to the plague decided to establish the chapel. The chapel soon became a center of attraction for pilgrims and for that reason was enlarged to its current state in 1726. A beautiful dirt road starts from this chapel, which meanders along ancient forests and stunning views.

Salphensebaan Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The chapel owes its existence in May 1955 to the establishment of the NATO airfield.
The pious surveyor Housset, who carried out the measurements, had expressed the wish to erect a Lady chapel along the road to the airport and he also donated the statue of Mary, which has since been replaced many times after vandalism.

Scherpenbergmolen, Westmalle

Highlight • Monument

The Müllenbruck brothers built this stone windmill, a round mountain mill, in 1843. It was used as a flour mill until the late 1940s. In 1985 he was again made to grind. The Scherpenberg mill can be visited every Sunday afternoon from 2 pm to 5 pm. This mountain or belt mill was popularly called De Stenen Molen to distinguish it from the wooden mill on the Oude Molenstraat, which was demolished around 1942. The original name Scherpenbergmolen refers to the toponym of its location. After various restorations, the stone Scherpenbermolen is back in top condition and does what it always did: grind grain into flour. The millers are happy to welcome you every Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. You can also visit the various attics where you will receive an expert explanation from one of the millers. You can enjoy Kempense outdoor fun on the last Sunday of August under the rotating windmill blades.
