La Brigue

Highlight • Settlement

Before the Treaty of Paris, which followed the conclusion of the Second World War, La Brigue was part of the province of Cuneo with the name of Briga Marittima. After 12 February 1947, the date of the treaty, it was ceded together with the Morignolo fraction from Italy to France.

Exploit technique or work of the devil? The Pont du Coq immediately surprises with its improbable angle above the Levenza. It was rebuilt in 1710 after a flood destroyed the old medieval bridge.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Fountains

Highlight • Religious Site

The Notre-Dame-des-Fontaines chapel, or the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Fountains, is located very close to the Italian border and welcomes around 12,000 people a year. The name comes from seven local springs that flow from the rock.

The sanctuary is famous for a huge 15th-century fresco, the "Last Judgment" by Giovanni Canavesio, which gives it the nickname of the "little Sistine Chapel of the Alps". The church itself dates back to the 12th century. As is the case with other local river springs, this was a sacred place long before Christianity established itself in the region; Roman coins and other votive offerings have been found nearby. It is not always open and, if you wish to visit it, I recommend obtaining information from the tourist office in La Brigue.

September 11, 2024,nd de Fontaine e piccola variante sotto sanson
A classic in the La Brigue area, the descent that leads back to the nd de fontaines sanctuary (worth a visit: cost 5 euros, pay attention to the opening hours if interested) is a long and varied trail that has some small technical parts in the upper and final parts, but is generally easy to follow with a bit of …

A very fun ride from La Brigue, or Briga Marittima, a former Italian municipality, now divided into two parts Brigue and Briga Alta.
The ride consists of a climb on military roads to Bassa di Sanson from which you then descend along a beautiful single track path that reaches the church of Notre Dame de Fontaine, a remarkable chapel completely …
