Mott Street Climb, Epping Forest

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Number 26 of the UK's top 100 Climbs. Just North of London in the county of Essex lies High Beach and the climb of Mott Sreet.

Studying the topography, it's a surprise to find such a tough ascent in this area, (there are many shorter hills around), but Mott Street is a a proper climb. Begin your ascent at the broken bridleway marker just off the A112. The road bends left, passing the junction to Lipits Hill, and then rises.

A tough opening section flattens where you reach the farm buildings on both sides of the road. A strong whiff of manure is just what you need to propel you up the following lump onto the hardest section. The well-surfaced stretch with a 12% gradient winds past large gated properties on both sides, levelling slightly halfway up. The final sector heads into tree cover and the brow comes opposite a bridleway, after which there are just a few hundred meters of false flat before the climb ends at the junction of Church Road.

Wake Road, Epping Forest

Highlight • Cycleway

Heading north Wake Road seems like a lesser used road up to the Miller&Carter roundabout. Smooth tarmac with no potholes to dodge, a barely noticeable incline, and very few cars (or perhaps I just got lucky). The woodland on either side seems to absorb the local traffic noise and with the sun shining down it's a lovely few minutes of escapism on two wheels.

Epping Upland Dash

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Fantastic fast smooth winder, mainly downhill. A great way to escape London, avoiding Epping.

St John the Baptist Church, Epping Green

Highlight • Religious Site

Epping Green is a quaint village between Epping and Harlow and lies mainly within Epping Forest land. It’s quite small and cozy but it has little to no amenities. It has a 14th century church but with the lack of a coffee stop you won’t be stopping here for long.

Pembridge Lane

Highlight • Forest

Lovely wooded lane, nice and quiet, with the parallel White Stubbs Lane taking most of the brunt of car traffic (not a lot there either, so don't feel like you have to avoid it!).

Going north there is a nice back street route to Barnet via Friern Bridge Shopping Centre, New Southgate station, Totteridge and Whetstone station and Dollis Valley Cycle Route to Barnet and onward to Ridge and Shenley.
Alternatively you can make you way via Friern Bridge Shopping Centre to North Finchley , Dollis Valley to Barnet etc. There are plans to make this into a cycle route. Do write to Barnet Council for information about this.
