Wild Boar Fence at the German-Danish Border – Nationalpark Vadehavet

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

The fence on the German-Danish border will be a total of 70 kilometers long. The elements are 1.50 meters high from the earth's surface and reach 50 centimeters deep into the earth. He is said to prevent the wild boar from wandering from Schleswig-Holstein over the border, so that the African swine fever does not enter the country. Overall, the Danes have the project cost around 10 million euros. Aside from the fact that the effectiveness of the fence against African swine fever is dubious, I rather believe that it should really be a symbol of separation and stop refugees. But those who see the fence can no longer seriously claim both. As little as the fence should help against anything, it bothers him so much. "That makes something in the mind." The old border was suddenly back.

Rickelsbüller Koog

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Rickelsbüller Koog lies between the Hindenburgdamm causeway and the Danish border in the far north of our region. On the Danish side, it borders the Margarethe Koog, separated by a wild boar fence that has been in place since the end of 2019 and has been the subject of much discussion.

The Rickelsbüller Koog covers almost 540 hectares and is the northernmost polder in Schleswig-Holstein.

The dike was only completed in 1982, and since then the polder has been completely disconnected from the saltwater. This has allowed diverse habitats to develop, primarily benefiting migratory and breeding wading birds and waterfowl.

Large flocks of birds can be observed here, especially in spring and autumn. They find a rich food supply from which to replenish their fat reserves for their long migration.

From autumn to spring, thousands of winter visitors arrive.

Besides barnacle geese, these include wigeons and dunlins.

The red knot, for example (a bird from the sandpiper family), is about

the size of a blackbird and almost doubles its weight while resting in the Rickelsbüller Koog.

With luck, you might also spot a white-tailed eagle here.

So it's always worth having binoculars with you.

The nature reserve can be circumnavigated on foot, a distance of almost 13 km. Unfortunately, this isn't possible by bicycle; you can only skirt its perimeter. There are several information panels along the way, and an information pavilion about the Wadden Sea National Park is located at the parking area. A birdwatching hide, which is hard to miss, can be found halfway along the route.

The northernmost point on the German mainland is unfortunately not very attractive and unremarkable visually, but it is all the more so historically and geographically, making it an absolute highlight. The northernmost point in Germany is the Ellenbogen on Sylt.
The access to the Rickelsbüller Koog and the Margarehe Kog is at the Norddeich-Sieltoft border crossing and is also the northernmost point on the German mainland.
For a long time, the westernmost border post of all border crossings between Germany and Denmark was also the most inhospitable. Anyone who worked here felt like they were being transferred. The brutal weather during the winter storms in particular caused problems for the border guards. Today, the small border house and the disused barrier are a reminder of that time. This border crossing is now monitored using scanners and cameras. And mobile patrols now carry out their duties at the former outer dike on an irregular basis.
The Rickelsbüller Koog is located on the Germany-Denmark border route and is the starting point of the North Sea-Baltic Sea cycle path. From here you can reach the tranquil and picturesque Danish village of Højer via the Norddeich Sieltoft border crossing.
