St. Martin Church, St. Michael's Chapel, and St. James's Chapel in Tafers

Highlight • Religious Site

The townscape of Tafers is characterized by the church of St. Martin and the two neighboring chapels. The polygonal church tower with the spire covered with wooden shingles dates from the 16th century. On the central square are also the Michaelskapelle and the Jakobskapelle, the latter impresses with its artistic wall paintings.

Gottéron Valley

Highlight • Bridge

The countless stairs, footbridges and bridges lead you through the Galterengraben (La vallée du Gottéron) along the Galterenbach (Galtera = Gottéron) from Tafers to the lower town of Freiburg/Fribourg. By the way, there are several spellings for this ditch, e.g. "Galterntal" or French versions, but they always mean the same thing 🤷🏻‍♂️.
In the lower town (old town) the Galterenbach ends where it meets the Saane. It is also a hike from German-speaking Switzerland to the predominantly French-speaking city of Freiburg (Fribourg 😉).
Every now and then the hiking trail is closed due to falling rocks or woodwork. The municipality of Tafers provides information on its website under “News”.

Ratzekahl, the Gorge Monster

Highlight • Natural

Now just look at this fellow. It's actually just a moldy tree stump on the side of the road that guards the entrance and exit to the Galtern Gorge. From a distance it looks like a mixture of a vulture and a lizard. But if you have an abundance of imagination, you might see it as another mythical creature. 🦄 We'd rather not run into it at night. But during the day it's completely harmless. At least that's what we think.
