The Eckertalsperre south of Bad Harzburg was put into operation in 1943 and dams the Ecker and its tributaries.

At the time of the division of Germany, the inner-German border ran through storage space and a dam. The old GDR border column on the barrier structure is still preserved.
Around the reservoir there is another 10 km long circular path.
