A special form of forest is widespread in the Thurauen: the light forest. It is of great importance for biodiversity and highly valued for a relaxing walk.

Around three quarters of the protected area of the Thurauen consists of forest. But anyone who has ever hiked through the whole area knows that not all forests are the same! In the Thurauen in particular, there are very different forest forms. Low-lying forest areas near the banks of the Thur are characterized by moist soil and recurrent flooding. Willows and poplars that can withstand a lot of water primarily grow here. Such a softwood meadow can be found in the natural forest reserve south of the mouth of the Thurm. On the other hand, forest areas far away from the Thur and higher up are dominated by oak, sycamore maple or wood pines. It is precisely in these forest areas that extensive light forests have been created in recent years.
