Sheet Village Green

Highlight • Rest Area

Sheet is a ‘chocolate box’ village just outside Petersfield. The village green is a great place to stop with a huge tree surrounded by a bench, traditional cottages, a village hall and a pub.

The Harrow Inn, Steep

Highlight • Pub

Walking into the Harrow Inn is like stepping back in time. The 17th-century, Grade II-listed pub boasts traditional decor, gorgeous beams, cosy fires, and a good choice of food and drink. As both rooms are inside the pub are designated bars, children are not allowed inside. However, there are gardens and covered outdoor seating at the front where children are allowed. Another quirk is that the pub toilets are across the road. A nice pub-stop for hikers on the Shipwrights Way. For more information, visit: theharrowinnsteep.co.uk.

Stack of Books Sculpture

Highlight • Monument

I didn't expect to find a sculpture linked to Star Wars in this tiny little village outside Petersfield and neither did I expect a stack of books sculpture to be linked to Start Wars...

This sculpture, which is one of several on the Shipwrights Way, commemorates several past residents of Steep, including Alec Guinness (well known as the original Obi Wan Kenobi from Star Wars), John Wyndham (of Day of the Triffids fame) and the poet, Edward Thomas.

All Saints Church, South Downs

Highlight • Religious Site

The fact that a Christian house of worship - essentially encompassing the whole of heaven - is consecrated "ALL SAINTS" is not that common; it is usually one (or occasionally two) named saints who are the patron saint of a church - and therefore usually also over the municipality or town in which it is located.
But in search of the origin you have to go far back into history, because the model for this practice of dedicating to ALL SAINTS can be seen as a pagan custom, according to which there were already central temples in pre-Christian times that were generally dedicated to all deities (PANTHEON). were consecrated. Probably the most famous Pantheon, a former pagan temple and now a Christian place of worship, is located in the Italian capital.

Steep Hill Ascent

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

They weren't kidding when they named the village Steep. The return trip is a long slog up a very steep hill that beat me. I had to walk the last quarter.
