St. Peter's Church - Mazenzele

Highlight • Religious Site

The church, dating from the 13th century, perhaps earlier, is partly the oldest existing building in the municipality of Opwijk. A large part was made with sandstone from the nearby Kravaalbos. It was definitively protected as a monument by the ministerial decision of 16 November 1997. During the First World War, part of the church (including the tower) was blown up by the Germans. The so-called Thiende bell 'Maria' has been hanging in the tower since 1639. It was cast by J. Brouchart. The picturesque church was restored on the outside. During the restoration work, an archaeological investigation was also carried out and the 19th-century Anneessensorgel from the church in Nijverseel was returned to the parish church of Mazenzele. In 1967, the walled cemetery was removed and a new cemetery was constructed along the Kouterbaan.

Verduynlos in the Kravaalbos

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

The Kravaalbos is an ecologically valuable old-growth forest, characterized by a colorful spring flora. It is centrally located in the beautiful, gently rolling landscape between Aalst, Asse, and Opwijk. Here originate the streams that meander so charmingly through the landscape.
The forest is accessible year-round on the paths. Sturdy shoes are recommended. In rainy weather, the paths become muddy and difficult to navigate. Not accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

Putberg Castle Estate

Highlight • Castle

Kasteeldomein Putberg eclectic country house in Neo-Flemish Renaissance style on the edge of a medieval quarry. Leon De Coster, representative of the people, had it built in 1878. It was later bought by Viscount Théophile de Lantsheere, former Minister of Justice and Governor of the National Bank. German, British and Canadian soldiers once stayed in this castle. Strange trees. Picnic Table

Highlight • Rest Area

March 2026: no picnic table in sight. It's still a lovely path here, of course! It's a shame you have to walk between two wire fences.

Kravaalbos Forest

Highlight • Forest

An old forest on the edge of the faluintjes. The forest is a remnant of the former Coal Forest. In the autumn, enjoy the colours and scents. In the spring, the purple Bluebells.
A must to wander around in this forest.
