The Schransbossen

Highlight • Forest

The Ferraris map from 1777 shows us a forest area of several dozen hectares between the current Wolzakken road and the Leuvensebaan. The presence of grasslands deep into the forest is striking. The forest was used for convenience and coppicing for a long time. The forests along the Wolzakken in particular have largely disappeared in the meantime. Now there are only wood edges and sometimes reforested plots with, among other things, poplar and, on the drier parts, Scots pine. The Schranshoeve was also prominently present in the landscape in the 18th century.

The local name for these forests is the ‘Schransbossen’, after the double schrans with hawthorn and blackthorn hedge in the forest. At that location, the cattle traders, on their way to the Anderlecht slaughterhouse, would have housed their cattle at night and thus protected them relatively easily from cattle thieves. This part of the area has only been forested for a few decades. A remnant of that double schrans is still visible.
