St. Pankratius Church Körrenzig

Highlight • Religious Site

Emperor Konrad II mentioned the old church in Körrenzig as early as 1029. Starting from the then probably single-nave quarry stone building, the church was expanded in eight construction phases over the centuries. It received its current form in the 17th - 18th centuries. After the construction of a new parish church, the old church had not been used since 1962 and was in danger of falling apart due to damage caused by subsidence. In 1998 the association "Save the Old Church Körrenzig e.V." was founded with the aim of renovating the old church and using it again for ecclesiastical as well as cultural purposes.

After restoration of stability by RWE Power AG and the diocese of Aachen, the extensive restoration work began, which was carried out through membership fees, donations and in-house contribution. The church was reopened in September 2005 and has been used regularly ever since. It is particularly appreciated for family celebrations such as baptisms, weddings and anniversaries due to the intimate atmosphere. The highlights of the use are the annual Marien-Octav in September and the event series "Kultur Alte Kirche". Concerts, lectures and readings take place here in the summer months.

Rurich Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle was the seat of the family of the same name, from which Engebrand and Wilhelm von Rurich were first mentioned in a document in 1248. In the middle of the 15th century, the castle at that time came to the family of Zweibrüggen through marriage, whose members, like those of all other genders, called themselves “von Rurich”. Through marriage, this time to Sophia von Rurich with Heinrich von Reuschenberg (later to zu Eicks), the property came to his family in 1517.

Along the Rur

Highlight • River

Large areas of the Rur and the Rur valley up to Linnich are designated as nature reserves. These are the Upper Rur Valley with the rock formations of the Ehrensteinley, the Middle Rur Valley with the rock formations of the Perdsley and Wiselsley, the Rur Valley with the rock formations of the Uhusley, Buntsandsteinfelsen in the Rurtal between Heimbach and Kreuzau, Rur in Jülich, the Rur meander between Floßdorf and Broich, Buntsandsteinfelsen Blens and Rurtal from Abenden to where the Rur flows into the Obermaubach reservoir. Some of these areas are also designated as fauna-flora-habitat areas. There are problems with red sandstone rocks used as climbing rocks in the Rur valley or in side valleys, where the habitat in the entry area of climbing routes or through "sweeping out" loose debris or rock vegetation is degraded or lost. In particular, the occurrence of the wall lizard is being disturbed and egg-laying sites at the foothills of the fields are being destroyed.
