Above the center of Schmidtheim lies the impressive, elegant castle complex. Today it is hardly noticeable that it was originally built as a moated castle. At 545 meters, it is the highest moated castle in the Rhineland.

Towards the end of the 12th century, the noble family of Smydeheim is mentioned in documents; they built the castle next to the parish church.
