Northchurch Common

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

A great walk through Northchurch Common, a lot of which is open grassland, large wide space also including woodlands, paths and bridleways. It's a park, but one with a difference!

This is a good place to leave the Grand Union Canal towpath to visit Berkhamsted. If you don't want to drag your bike up the steps there's a ramp westward, at bridge 140D.

At the nearby castle ruins (behind the railway line), William the Conqueror received the submission of the English, after the Battle of Hastings.

This is the nearest canal bridge to the railway station and the best from which to venture onto the High Street. You'll find plenty of cafés and bakeries, but the pavement is quite narrow in parts, which means parking your bike could be a problem.

Berkhamsted has some canal-side pubs. The best for cyclists are the Rising Sun (by lock 55) and The Old Mill (by Rose Bridge 143). If these are busy, high street pubs with outside space for bikes are The Bull, and The Kings Arms. Lovelo, the local bike shop is just off the high street, opposite W H Smiths.
