Poelaert Lake in De Gavers Provincial Domain

Highlight • Lake

The Poelaertplas is a large lake in the provincial domain De Gavers in Onkerzele, a sub-municipality of Geraardsbergen. The lake is approximately 20 hectares in size and has a maximum depth of 4.5 meters. You can swim, kayak, dive, fish or just enjoy the nature and the view. The lake is named after the Poelaert family, who used to own the domain. The lake was created by sand extraction for the construction of the E40 motorway in the 1970s.

Wolvenhoek-Kortendries Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

The Wolvenhoek-Kortendries are street names and a slope in the Flemish Ardennes between Roborst (Zwalm) and Sint-Goriks-Oudenhove (Zottegem). The top is situated in this last village.

The slope has unofficially been included in the Tour of Flanders. In 1990 Laurent Fignon and Pedersen attacked in the Ronde on this slope, Moreno Argentin and Rudy Dhaenens countered and went straight on. Argentin eventually won in the sprint. The slope is characterized by two parts, first the ascent of the Slijpstraat, then descend to the right and left again, the Kortendries.

Bostmolen Watermill

Highlight • Monument

The Bostmolen, or Machelgemmolen, is a watermill with locks on the Zwalm. Once there was an oil and grain mill. The mill has been out of use since 1966. There is now a restaurant. Nearby, in the former miller's house, you will find café Het Brugske.

Brakel Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

phototheek.wordpress.com/2018/04/05/uitkijktoren-brakel

The tower in Brakel is 30 meters high and there are 162 stair steps, every 5 steps there is a platform.
(well, it is actually a GSM mast)
It is a galvanized steel construction of 37,500 kg
With the masts attached, the tower is at a height of 41 m. The platform is 7.5 m. At 7.5 m.
Next to the tower is the water tower (actually the lake is a water reservoir) built in 1984
It is quite low compared to a normal water tower. The roof is covered with solar panels.
It was a fairly unique view from above. It was also quite clear weather, so you could see far and fun to take pictures.
Well worth the climb
