S-chanf, an Engadine village with beautifully restored houses

Highlight • Settlement

As is typical for many towns in the Engadin, the intact historic village center of S-chanf also exudes a very original charm. The Romansh culture is omnipresent.

From S-chanf you can quickly reach the Swiss National Park.

The well-known Swiss National Park Marathon and several Transalp routes that lead over the Chaschauna Pass to Livigno run through the town.

Baselgia Catholic Church of St. Catherine and Barbara, Zuoz
The church first appeared in documents in 1446 as the chapel of "Sta. Catherine". It has been used for Catholic services since 1901.
In 1484 it was mentioned as "Ecclesia" with the secondary patronage of "Sta. Barbara". The church was destroyed by the Austrians in 1499 during the Swabian War.
Use was first regulated in a rental agreement from 1928. In 1930, Zuoz was made its own parish. The church then passed from the town community to the ownership of the Protestant parish. In the years 1950-1953, the Catholics had the interior renovated, the church received five stained glass windows and an organ in 1968. Since this renovation, Sta. Catherine has been a listed building. The rental agreement was revised in 1998 and Sta. Catherine became the property of the Catholic parish. The dimensions of the northeast-facing complex indicate that an older, smaller nave was extended by a longer chancel.

San Luzi Church, Zuoz

Highlight • Religious Site

Baselgia Reformed Church San Luzi Zuoz
Construction history, exterior: The church dedicated to St. Luzius was mentioned in 1139 as one of the three old parish churches in the Upper Engadine. The Romanesque, east-facing substructure (early 13th century) includes the surrounding walls of the nave with fields bordered by pilaster strips on the sides and arched friezes on the top, which suggest that the church is located below. The basement and the other floors of the tower are also Romanesque, with arched frieze fields and, at the top, with three-part coupled round arches. In 1507 - probably under Bernhard von Puschlav - a new choir was built in late Gothic style, the nave was vaulted, the walls were reinforced with stepped buttresses and the tower was raised by one floor with large sound windows. A further floor was added at the end of the 16th century, and a spire and pyramidal roof in the 19th century (three bells in the tower in 1586, 1774, 1798). The west façade has a profiled pointed arch portal made of tuff and gravestones of old Zuoz families. Renovations took place in 1984 (inside), 1990 (outside) and 2016 (inside).
Interior: The tower walls protrude into the room on the north side of the choir arch. The floor plan shown explains the situation [SINV]. In place of the strongly recessed Romanesque apse (dark = Romanesque construction phase in the 13th century), the enlarged choir was built, slightly angled to the south (light = late Gothic construction phase in 1507). The nave is covered by a net vault with relief keystones, and the choir by a star vault. In 1912, a massive gallery was built on the side of the entrance over a construction of three pointed arches and an organ was installed on it (J. Metzler, Felsberg; restored and extended in 1982 by H. Senn, Unterengstringen ZH). The spacious choir offers space for three rows of benches and a communion table (17th century). On the northern choir wall there is a tabernacle with an artistic top, next to it the door to the tower, the preacher's chair and on the tower wall the pulpit with inscriptions. Further inscriptions can be found under the coats of arms of the Juvalta and Planta families on the right and left choir arch walls, below the windows and under the gallery. The windows are decorated with excellent stained glass: in the middle of the choir by Augusto Giacometti La Speranza (1929) and next to it La Charited (1933) and as a third window La Cretta by Constant Könz - on the south wall also by Constant Könz Sabbath Rest (2011) and Tree of Life and Living Fire (2009) and by Gian Casty The Three Magi, donated by a Zuoz family - in the rose window above the organ Faith by Giuseppe Scartazzini (student of Giacometti).

Village center of Zuoz

Highlight • Settlement

Many beautiful old and beautifully restored buildings. Nice village square. Even individual buildings with newer architecture. Unfortunately, far too much is being built on the outskirts of Zuoz.
