Chur-Coira (Switzerland)

Highlight • Settlement

For those who descend from the S. Bernardino or Spluga pass heading north, the first major town you meet is Chur, which has always been the gateway to important trade routes and alpine passes crossed by merchants, pilgrims, soldiers…
Even today, Coira, the capital of the Swiss canton of Grisons, is the commercial and cultural center of a wide region, as evidenced by the numerous shops, museums, theaters, as well as the 800-years-old Cathedral.
The city center, with its intricate lanes and historic buildings, is closed to traffic, but it is accessible by bicycles and the city is reachable by the beautiful cycling path of the Rhine.

Chur railway station

Highlight • Rest Area

Bahnhof SBB, RhB / PostAuto Station, Chur
The first train rolled into Chur in 1858. More precisely: on the outskirts of Chur, because at that time the area between the old town and the Rhine was still largely undeveloped. However, Chur had been an important transport hub north of the Alpine passes long before the railway era. The glass roof, which has spanned the railway tracks and PostAuto deck like an archway since 1994, architecturally points to this significance. The station building on Bahnhofplatz is much older: it dates from 1878 and adjoins the station buffet from the early 20th century. From 2001 to 2008, the station was expanded/modernized and received the Brunel Award in 2011 for it.
Discover the mountain world of Graubünden and the UNESCO World Heritage routes of the Rhaetian Railway with the Bernina and Glacier Express from Chur. Whether it's the surrounding chic resorts like Davos-Klosters and St. Moritz, or sports and leisure destinations like Arosa and Lenzerheide, all neighbours are directly accessible from the city on the Rhine by train and PostAuto. With its local mountain Brambrüesch, Chur is also the only city in Switzerland with its own summer and winter sports area, which is accessible by cable car directly from the centre.

Chur

Highlight • Settlement

Obertor Tower, Chur
Together with the Malteser and Sennhof towers, the Obertor is one of the remaining tower structures of the medieval city fortifications. Due to its decorative appearance, the Obertor soon became a landmark of Chur. The four-storey building, which becomes narrower towards the top, fits into the settlement structure modeled on the city wall, but at the same time visually stands out from this row of buildings thanks to its bright exterior. The paintings in the archway date from the 20th century, some of them based on old city views.

Tschiertschen

Highlight • Settlement

Tschiertschen was voted the most beautiful mountain village in Graubünden following an appeal by the tourism association. On the one hand it is beautifully rustic, just as you would imagine, but on the other hand it is lively - and not just with tourists. In addition to pretty houses, there is a village shop and a cultural center. In summer, Tschiertschen is a great starting point for hikes and bike tours, and in winter there is a small but nice ski area.

Haldenhüttli Viewpoint (Chur)

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Haldahüttli was recently restored by students from the city of Chur. It's also a lookout point over the whole city!

View of Chur

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the Fürhörnli down the path it was a bit too narrow and had too many paragraphs (we chose the wrong way). The downhill to the village was sensational and was a lot of fun
