View from the Pulverturm over Merano

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Pulverturm is located directly on the Tappeinerweg and is easy to climb. From here you have a great view over the Adige Valley.

On the south side of the Passer, from the Postbrücke bridge in the direction of the Passeiertal valley, lies the summer promenade. It is lined with large trees and other plant species such as Cedar of Lebanon, Giant Sequoias, Poplars and Pine species from different climate zones and is particularly suitable for a shady walk. Especially impressive is the promenade's development from a city park to a wild river floodplain: the further east you go, the closer you get to the Passer and its natural banks.

The Merano summer promenade was laid out around 1866 and leads along the Passer to the "Steinernen Steg" (Stone Bridge). In memory of Empress Elisabeth's many holidays in the spa town of Merano, there is a monument at the lower entrance to the summer promenade, which also marks the end point of the "Sissi Trail" to Trauttmansdorff Castle.

Steinerner Steg (Stone Bridge)

Highlight • Bridge

The bridge was built in 1617, unlike wooden bridges, the massive stone arches also withstood flooding. Thus, in the past, the Steinerne Steg was often the only crossing over the Passer. From here you can see far into the Gilfenklamm and even in midsummer it is pleasantly cool here!

The Steinerne Steg is an old bridge over the Passer in Merano in Burggrafenamt (South Tyrol). The two-arched bridge was built in 1616-17 in place of an older wooden bridge by the Brixen architect Andrä Tanner; she is now closed to traffic. The sometimes to be found assumption, the Italian name Ponte Romano pointed to a Roman predecessor, does not correspond to the historical facts: The name was invented in 1935 by the fascist authorities in the course of their Italianization campaign in South Tyrol. [2] In the Merano address book of 1929 is still Ponte di Pietra listed as a name.

Bozen Gate (Bozner Tor), Merano

Highlight • Monument

Bolzano Gate
In the 14th century, when Meran became a city, the Counts of Tyrol had a wall built to protect the city from enemies. After the capital of Tyrol was moved from Meran to Innsbruck, the city walls were no longer serviced and were thus almost completely destroyed over time. Today only small parts of it can be seen, as well as three of the four entrance gates to the city.
The Bolzano Gate on the sand court was built in the 14th century and has been preserved in its original form to this day. On the south side you can see the coats of arms (late 15th century) of Austria, Tyrol and Merano. Behind the Bozner Tor there is a marble relief on the facade of the house, which depicts King Heinrich of Tyrol and his wife.
