Old Town Hall and Music School

Highlight • Historical Site

The Wilfersdorfer Freihaus was built by Jonas von Wilfersdorf in 1570 to replace the demolished city tower. The building was acquired by the city in 1651 and served as the town hall until 1848, after which it was a district court and has been a music school since 1973.

The building is two-storeyed, has sloped tower substructures protruding laterally, vaulted rooms on the ground floor, a small balcony in the middle and a pillar arcade courtyard inside. The building was badly damaged in the explosion of the powder tower in 1683, which resulted in the rear parts being demolished in 1699. The two octagonal facade towers visible in a view of Vischer from 1680 were shortened to their present height in 1756 and 1774 due to the risk of collapse and re-covered.

AUGUSTINER EREMITENKIRCHE

In 1362 the citizens of Fürstenfeld asked Duke Rudolf IV to settle the Augustinian hermits in order to obtain a religious counterbalance to the aristocratic coming. The church and monastery were built from 1365 to 1368.
The monastery, which was demolished in 1956, consisted of an inner courtyard with a cloister surrounded by three wings. Archbishop Ortholph von Aponie consecrated the monastery in 1367. In 1480 troops of the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus plundered it completely, monastery inmates were captured and brother Heinrich von Rattenburg was strangled (memorial plaque in the passage). Fires in 1503 and 1685 caused severe damage, and in 1683 the nearby powder tower exploded.
In 1685 the church was rebuilt under the direction of master builder Hueber. In 1811 the monastery was dissolved. In 1945 the church was damaged again.

Türkenbrunnen

Highlight • Monument

This fountain commemorates the many raids by Hungarians, Turks, and Kuruc. At that time, it served not only as a water fountain but also as a hiding place for valuables during times of unrest.

The groundwater well is in operation year-round and is 26 meters deep.

The well casing and the semicircular basin in front of it were made of St. Margarethen sandstone. It was commissioned in 2002.
