European Bison Reserve – Białowieża National Park

Highlight • Natural

The European Bison Show Reserve is located on the Hajnówka–Białowieża road, approx. 3 km before Białowieża. On an area of approx. 27 ha, in conditions close to natural, all species of hoofed mammals living in the Białowieża Forest and large predators are presented. Anyone who, while traversing the trails of the Białowieża Forest, was not lucky enough to see a bison, can see one in the Reserve. A group of European bison is presented there, consisting of an adult male, several female bisons and their offspring. Elks, deer, roe deer and wild boars live in separate enclosures. Another attraction is the possibility of seeing a wolf and a lynx. The Reserve also exhibits a group of tarpan-type horses and zubrons - crossbreeds (hybrids) of European bison with domestic cattle. Practical information: The European Bison Show Reserve is entered through an educational pavilion. The building offers an interactive educational room and temporary exhibitions free of charge - the approximate time of the visit is about 30 minutes. A walk around the area where the animal enclosures are located takes about 1 hour.

NOTE:
Dogs and other animals are not allowed in the Bison Show Reserve, except for assistance dogs, in accordance with the Act on Vocational and Social Rehabilitation and Employment of Disabled Persons.
You can ride a bike in the reserve, but for an additional fee.

Here, a sign by the road indicates the entrance to the beautiful Żebra Żubra trail - the other end is on Zastawa Street in Białowieża.

Right next to this place to the south is a bison enclosure, where you can see these beautiful animals after parting with a few zlotys. Otherwise, I invite you to the trail, which is really great.

You are about halfway along the short, 2.7-kilometer Żubra Żubra Trail. Interesting fact: it was the first forest nature trail in Poland, marked in the 1970s. The trail's name comes from the widely spaced planks or tree trunks arranged in some places, resembling ribs.

Easy entry to the Żebra Żubra educational trail, leading through various, beautiful, forest environments, mostly with a nicely inviting footbridge through often marshy areas.

There is also a car park and a shelter here, so access is really easy and it is a great idea for a walk from Białowieża.

Zebra Zubra Educational Path

Highlight • Trail

This parking lot only offers a narrow area for about 10 cars, but parallel to this you can also park on the side of the road. Watch out here in front of the ditch! 👋

The Białowieża Museum – Open-Air Museum of Wooden Architecture of the Ruthenian People of Podlasie consists of nine well-preserved buildings, which can be divided into four groups. The first consists of two huts standing near the gate. They have a slightly different character than the other buildings, because their attics have been converted into rooms for tourists. One of these buildings comes from the village of Klejniki, dates back to 1893, and was moved and reconstructed in 1988. The hall, room and chamber are open to visitors. It is worth seeing the fabrics and clay vessels typical of the region collected in the room. The second building is the oldest hut in the museum – dated back to 1885, moved from the village of Czyżyki. You can see there, above all, an oven for baking bread. The second group includes a charming wooden chapel (temporary chapel) dedicated to St. Alexander Nevsky, modelled on the temple from the village of Nowoberezowo. The place where the chapel stands is largely fenced off by a kind of moat, which makes it look as if it were standing on a small island surrounded by beautiful Białowieża landscapes. Two wooden crosses and a stone are placed next to it.

The third group consists of two windmills (both come from Orla) and farm buildings: a cottage from the village of Biała, a workshop (so-called majsternia) from Widów and a barn from the village of Koszele. The windmills of the post type date back to the interwar years of the 20th century.

The fourth group consists of only one exhibit - and it is a fence made of so-called balas. It was made by the founders of the institution in the years 1983-1984 and is a faithful copy of traditional woven fences. The construction of such a fence consists of three vertical poles and (vertically) interwoven spruce branches.
The landscapes themselves are a separate attraction. They can be admired both in the museum itself - they are truly fairy-tale! – and in its vicinity.

A very interesting, beautiful, wooden covered bridge over the Narewka River, leading to the famous Palace Park, with beautiful views of the river.

Białowieża Palace - currently closed final railway station located in the center of Białowieża. The railway station was built within 4 months of 1897 for the needs of the residence of the tsars of Russia - the palace in Białowieża - erected by order of Tsar Alexander III in 1894. The tsar and his family traveled by train for hunting, which was prepared for weeks or even months earlier. Before his arrival, the entire station was decorated, he was greeted by the whole entourage. After the destruction of the wooden pavilions from the end of the 19th century during World War II, a station building in the late modernist style was built in their place in the 1970s, which was destroyed after being abandoned after 1994. The route to Hajnówka was used for over 100 years until the line was closed on December 31, 1993 due to unprofitability of transport. In the years 2014-2015, the construction of a new wooden pavilion referring to the railway station from the end of the 19th century was carried out. Due to the terrain limitations, the reconstructed building is not an exact copy of the old one (it was shortened and reversed; the original station faced the park and the palace).
