West Wheal Owles Pumping House

Highlight • Historical Site

Poldark fans might recognise this as Wheal Leisure from the popular BBC TV series. Its beautiful cliff top location contrasts starkly with the hard and dangerous work carried out by men, women and children here.

The risk, tragedy and loss of working in a mine was felt very keenly here at West Wheal Owles. In 1893, 20 men and boys were killed when mine excavations blasted through to the flooded Wheal Drea mine nearby. Water rushed into the mine and a large gust of air blew out all the candles, leaving the miners to escape in the dark. None of the bodies were recovered and the mine was closed.

Botallack Mines

Highlight • Historical Site

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Botallack Mine is the perfect place to visit to learn about Cornwall's mining history and take in the breathtaking scenery of the 'Tin Coast'.

The mine extended out beneath the seabed and during its operational life mined iron, copper and arsenic. The mine buildings are in the care of the National Trust, with a cafe, visitors centre and holiday accommodation in the old Counting House.

View of Levant Mine

Highlight • Historical Site

Definitely worth a visit to the Levant mines area. Fascinating history of Cornish tin mining activity. You will find it hard to believe what those men and women endured to work those mines.

Levant Mine and Beam Engine

Highlight • Monument

The Levant Mine is a disused mine in the St Just mining district with an attached museum where a working balancing steam engine can be viewed. The mine is located near Trewellard, north of St Just in Cornwall, England, directly on the coast, about 10 kilometers northeast of Land's End.

However, the mine cannot be visited every day; advance booking is required online, and admission costs 13 pounds.

Geevor Tin Mine

Highlight • Historical Site

The stunning Cornish coastline around Pendeen was once at the heart of the Cornish tin and copper mining industry. Geevor Tin Mine gives you the opportunity to visit a real mine and learn what life was like for a Cornish miner.

View of Cape Cornwall

Highlight • Natural Monument

Look south west and I'll be rewarded with fantastic views of Cape Cornwall across the bay of Porth Leddon. Cape Cornwall is one of only two capes in the UK. You can walk all the way up to the chimney stacks.

Cape Cornwall Chimney Monument

Highlight • Monument

The distinctive headland of Cape Cornwall meets the ocean at the point where the Atlantic currents split and flow south up the English Channel or north into the Bristol Channel and Irish Sea. Once a heavily industrialised landscape, it is now part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, and is home to many species of seabirds which nest on the cliffs.
