Cabo de São Vicente Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

Five kilometers from Sagres rises the mythical Cabo de São Vicente, the last gaze of land for explorers setting off towards the unknown of the vast ocean.

Wild, windy, and imposing, this promontory of steep cliffs plunges into the Atlantic, crowned by one of Europe's most powerful lighthouses.

Called by the Romans Promontorium Sacrum, the "end of the world" was for centuries a sacred place, shrouded in legends and mysteries. Today, it remains a pilgrimage point for sailors, hikers, and dreamers, where the horizon seems to dissolve into infinity.

The European long-distance hiking trail E4 runs from west to east and starts in Portugal. In Sagres at Cape St. Vincent we first go east along the coast. Here it goes via Lago, Faro, Tavira to the Spanish border.

View to Cabo de São Vicente

Highlight • Viewpoint

The cape has been a sacred place since the Neolithic, as shown by menhirs (stone settings) in the area. In Phoenician times it is said to have been dedicated to the deity Melkart.[1] The Greeks called the place Ophiussa (Land of the Serpents) and its inhabitants Oestrimni (Inhabitants of the Far West), while the Romans called it Promontorium sacrum (Holy Promontory), as a magical place at the end of the world where the gods live and the Sun sinks into the sea.

The Christians named the coastal tip after Saint Vincent of Zaragoza, a patron saint of sailors. According to legend, the martyr's body was floated there in a boat and recovered in 304.[2]

View of Cabo de São Vicente

Highlight • Viewpoint

Cabo de São Vicente (Cape St. Vincent) is a dramatic and historically significant cape at the southwestern tip of Portugal, near the town of Sagres in the Algarve region. It is the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe and is often referred to as the "end of the world"—especially in earlier times, when it was believed that nothing existed beyond the horizon.

Praia do Telheiro

Highlight • Beach

Rather small sandy beach not far from Capo Sao Vicente. Can only be reached via dirt roads and by descending on unpaved paths. An international group of young people has started a renaturation project there. So you shouldn't leave the route to the beach.
