Priddy Sheep Hurdle Stack

Highlight • Historical Site

Standing in the centre of Priddy village green, this thatched stack of hurdles holds an important place in the history of the village. Local saying has it that if the hurdles did not remain in place from one sheep fair until the next, the lord of the manor could refuse the villagers' right to hold the annual fair, an event that has taken place since 1348.

Farm Shop and Restaurant

Highlight • Restaurant

Serve a very good English breakfast at the restaurant. Useful if you don't want to cook your own. Was busy when I called in on Sunday a.m. in August - I had to wait but was well looked after and the food was worth it!

Mendip Hills National Landscape

Highlight • Natural

Sprawling across Somerset, the Mendip Hills are a chain of picturesque rolling limestone hills. Situated to the south of Bristol and Bath, the hills run from Weston-super-Mare to Frome, covering 76 sq miles (198 km2). With stunning landscape of grassland, woodland and rocky hills, the area is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is also popular with cavers thanks to its dramatic gorges and intricate network of caves.

You can find out more information about the hills, here: nationaltrust.org.uk/mendip-hills

This appears to be a road on the map but it is not! The road goes down the beautifully named Velvet Bottom to Blackmore Reserve Car Park but then swiftly turns into a gravel track and then becomes a track more suitable for MTBs. Komoot took me this way as part of a ride planned using the Bike Tour profile. I was on a gravel bike and my friend was on her road bike. We decided it wasn't passable for us on that particular day (wet and windy), turned around and cycled back up the hill to the 'main road'. You might have more suitable bikes, be braver or have better weather. Not a 'Bike Tour' route for me though.

Mendips stone circle

Highlight • Historical Site

Eerie standing stone circle. Hop into the field (there’s a right of way) to play at being a Druid.
