Old Turn Junction

Highlight • River

At Old Turn Junction, where the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal meets the Birmingham Canal Navigations Main Line Canal. The island was installed during World War II, to allow the use of temporary dams to protect the railway tunnel beneath it, should the canal be breached by bombing. The north tunnel of the Stour Valley railway line (main western approach to New Street Station) runs a few yards north east of the junction, under the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal.

As usual in England, the food and drinks are ordered here at the bar. Food is served only on the ground floor. Large selection of local beers which are pumped up from the basement with traditional hand pumps.

Built in 1933 by T.Cecil Howitt, the building once housed the Municpal Bank and, after being vacant for a long time, was renovated and is now available for exhibitions, conferences and as a student incubator. The large interior with its coffered ceiling is impressive.
