Ashton Court Greenway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Brilliant new bit of cyclepath across Ashton Court from the university buildings to the wide gravel track up to the gate at the southern end. Very wide and easy gravel, although can get busy with both cyclists, walkers and dogs so take it easy.

Look out for the parallel little singletrack in the trees if that's more your bag.

Highlight • Viewpoint

Spanning the spectacular Avon Gorge, Clifton Suspension Bridge is one of Bristol's most iconic landmarks. The bridge has been a toll bridge since it opened in 1864, connecting Clifton to Leigh Woods. The bridge costs £1 for vehicles. Cyclists can ride across fo free.

A lovely place to walk and cycle, with great views over Bristol and herds of deer, and a cafe too

Chew Valley Lake

Highlight • Viewpoint

The fifth-largest man-made lake in the UK, Chew Valley Lake is a vast reservoir providing drinking water for Bristol and the surrounding area. The lake, opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1956, covers an area of 1,200 acres (4.9 km2).

Thanks to the indigenous and migrant birds that flock to the lake throughout the year, the lake is a national centre for birdwatching.

Cheddar Gorge Climb

Highlight • Viewpoint

Not as hard or as busy as I thought it would be... and I went on a sunny Saturday in May! The bottom is tourist heaven or hell depending on your point of view, it gets quieter when you get to the serious stuff and the top shallower section (which is lovely) is very tranquil in comparison. There's only one steep but fairly short section... 20% max, the rest is around 10% and the top only around 5%... it's a joy... go on you'll love it!
