Anglesey Abbey and Lode Mill

Highlight • Monument

A bit south of here, worth a detour...

Anglesey Abbey is a Jacobean House with a formal garden and 18th century water mill. The Quy Water flows along the back of the property, powering the working Lode mill.

The house and gardens are National Trust owned and paid entry.

Stow cum Quy Fen Pond

Highlight • Lake

On Stow cum Quy Fen is a small rectangular pond. It is likely this is a filled in pit from the 19th century when coprolite was quarried in the area. Then a valuable fertiliser, coprolite is apparently dinosaur dug. The area is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Pond at Quy Fen

Highlight • Viewpoint

Large sections around Quy Fen/Lode/Horningsea area, can be quite fun for gravel riders - as long as you stay away from the turnstiles, the gates, and the cows - in the middle section - it's possible to do a few loops around at a very fast clip on a decent gravel bike - then continue on - on very uneven (in patches) surface tarmac farm single track as far as Ely - criss-crossing routes 11 & 51 of the National Cycle Network (well signposted for those without GPS) past Reach/edge of Burwell/Wicken Fen. I guess these are very familiar routes to many cyclists, touring, gravel, and even the odd road bike cyclist - after all, some sections can be done in different bike types - it's just a question of avoiding parts that aren't suitable for your personal bike. 🚲
