Tilbury Fort

Highlight • Monument

Tilbury Fort, on the north bank of the River Thames, has protected London from seaward attackers since the 16th century. Henry III was the first to build a fort here to protect against French invaders. The fort you see today was built between 1670-84 and is hailed as the finest surviving example of 17th-century fortification in Britain. These days, you can explore the original guardhouse, chapel, gatehouse buildings, gunpowder magazines, Victorian underground passages, a museum, and more.

Tilbury Fort once protected London’s seaward approach from its original construction in the 16th century, right up until the Second World War. Now an English Heritage site, the fort is the very best example of this type of sea defence in the country.

As an English Heritage site, you will need to book tickets in advance if you want to pay a full visit during your ride. All information regarding Tilbury Fort can be found here: english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/tilbury-fort
