Nooit Gedagt Windmill, Woudrichem

Highlight • Monument

The predecessor of the current mill originally dates from 1662 and was a predecessor of the mill that was destroyed on site in 1945. However, it is assumed that a mill stood on this site much earlier. According to a list (from around 1280) of goods that were held in fief from the Count of Holland, there already appears to be a windmill in Woudrichem. In the past, it was customary for a city to have one or more city mills, owned by the city council. The mill was leased to a miller, who was authorised to grind grain into flour for third parties (farmers and bakers). The miller was often paid in kind.

The grain mill Nooit Gedagt has traditionally stood on the city wall of the fortified city of Woudrichem. The city wall is part of the defence works built by Adriaan Antonisz in 1583 on the orders of Prince William of Orange. Woudrichem, together with Gorinchem and Slot Loevestein, is part of the so-called 'iron triangle'. The mill was provided with the octagonal masonry superstructure in 1862. The substructure of an earlier date first accommodated a wooden octagon.

St. Martin's Church, Woudrichem

Highlight • Religious Site

The church tower of the St. Martin's Church in Woudrichem can be seen from afar. For those who want to visit Woudrichem, it is a landmark where the fortified town can be found.
The history of this church is a piece of the history of this old town. At the end of the 7th century, a chapel was founded on the site where the choir of the church now stands, by an employee and traveling companion of Bishop Willibrord. Later, in the 15th century, the church space was only built onto this chapel.

Birdwatching Hide Het Vinkennestje

Highlight • Mountain Hut

A bird hide has been placed at the entrance to the nature reserve, where nature lovers can enjoy the view and of course observe birds. The name of the hut is Het Vinkennestje. This is a reference to the café that was located years ago on the dike at Oudendijk.

Highlight • Beach

Who says you have to drive to the coast for the beach? You will also find lovely beaches along the Boven-Merwede with a view over the water. The floodplains are also a nice place to stroll through.

A nice walk mainly through the floodplains. Lots of grass and sand on the ground. Paths are not paved. Halfway through you will come across a restaurant in the harbor. You can sit there for a while.
