Historic Town Hall of Landsberg am Lech (Rathaus)

Highlight • Historical Site

From 1700, the New Town Hall was built in several phases. From 1719 to 1721 the building was extended by Dominikus Zimmermann and redesigned with a finely structured, towering gable front. The windows were staggered in size depending on the importance of the rooms behind them. The stucco facade is one of the most important profane creations of the master builder, who lived as a citizen in Landsberg from 1716 to 1757 and also temporarily served as a mayor here.

Sandauer Gate

Highlight • Monument

The northern end of the city wall is the Sandauer Tor, which was built in 1630 in the existing city wall. The name of the gate was chosen after a small market spot that was partially destroyed in the urban war in the 14th century and a quarter of an hour downstream. Because of many arson, the residents of Sandau settled on the Vorderen and Hintere Anger. The renewed expansion of the city became necessary in order to offer the new citizens protection within the wall.

Historical buildings, towers and gates – the city's 850-year history is omnipresent in Landsberg. The best way to discover the medieval streets and picturesque districts is on a guided city tour.

The Landsberg Bridge was mentioned in a document in 1150.
It replaced the previous ford in a shallow part of the Lech weir.

The Lechner is called the Karolinenwehr.
The Karolinenwehr is a four-stage weir of the Lech near the old town of Landsberg am Lech.

To the right of the weir system, which was probably built in 1364, is the Mühlbach, which used to drive mills and is now used to generate electricity. The originally single-stage weir was severely damaged several times by floods and was expanded in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries by installing additional stages. The weir has been rebuilt several times over the past decades, most recently between 1993 and 1996.
A bypass existed for rafting, on which rafts were led around the weir over the wooden plank route of the "long journey" for a fee. After rafting declined in the 20th century, the "long journey" was canceled in the 1970s.

Alte Bergstraße (Landsberg am Lech)

Highlight • Historical Site

In the old town of Landsberg runs between the Bayertor and Schmalzturm the "Alte Bergstrasse", a beautiful medieval alley. For many years it was the only street in Germany with left-hand traffic. The steep gradient on the Alte Bergstrasse often led to accidents with horse-drawn carriages and to the hazards of the drivers accompanying the wagons in the middle of the street. The switch to left-hand traffic enabled the drivers to move along the outside of the road and thus better protect themselves.
After the bypass of Landsberg had a rather calming effect on the "Alte Bergstrasse", a diverse and varied shopping area with a special flair was created there in 1996 due to the initiative of some Landsberg businessmen.

Today we were in Landsberg on the frosty Lech looking for an interesting city tour from the medieval upper town with the Bayertor and the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche down to the historic Christmas lower town. On our city tour we left out the old venerable JVA where Hitler and Hoeneß already moved into quarters and sat there so as not to be …

After my husband had something to do in Landsberg, I wanted to take a look at the city in detail. Already in the 14th century it was given city rights, in the 15th century with the city wall, which we have followed a lot today. A short break at the café at the Mutterturm is highly recommended!

Sometimes fate produces strange things. On the way back from Vienna to Bern, Google Maps guides us through rural Bavaria due to a mega traffic jam on the Munich motorway and leaves us stranded at the end of the day in the cozy “Landbergs am Lech”. We find out how lucky we are the next morning on our spontaneous city …

Landsberg am Lech, the Bavarian town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, is an impressive little town and of a manageable size. Unfortunately, it has not yet been possible to make the old town car-free. Due to the location of the city, between the Lech and the mountain, that will probably take some time. City maps with various tours are offered …
