The Brotherswater Inn

Highlight • Restaurant

A fellside pub, open every day (apart from Christmas day) and ready to welcome walkers, climbers and other outdoorsy types. Good food, beer, drinks and snacks as expected. Nice places to sit inside or outside.
They also have camping and rooms available.

High Hartsop Dodd

Highlight • Viewpoint

High Hartsop Dodd is a Wainwright fell in the Lake District National Park. It's most commonly hiked along with Little Hart Crag. It's a great ascent from Brothers Water too. The Eastern fells are beautiful on a sunny day.

Little Hart Crag

Highlight • Natural Monument

I have a soft spot for Little Hart Crag! From some angles it looks quite impenetrable but a couple of useful trails guide hikers to the summit. The Wainwright summit is the West Top which is marked by a cairn. A definite highlight of the Dovedale Horseshoe.

Scandale Pass

Highlight • Trail

For travellers on foot between Ambleside and Ullswater, the Scandale Pass is a much wilder and quieter option than joining the cars struggling up the Kirkstone Pass.

Four paths meet here: one from Ambleside, one from the northern end of Kirkstone, one from bulky Red Screes and one from Little Hart Crag, which belongs to the flailing eastern arm of the Fairfield massif, along with High Hartsop Dodd.

To the north west, just 131 feet (40 m) above the pass, is the small Scandale Tarn: an enticing prospect on a baking hot summer's day.

Red Screes summit cairn

Highlight • Viewpoint

A steep ascent up from the Kirkstone Pass Inn, the trail zig zags expertly in and around the crags. I found the route to be obvious in good visibility, with some of the steps low down on the route having been stone pitched. In dry weather the rock is grippy. It helps to put your hands on the rock in a couple of places (but it would be a stretch to call it a technical scramble).

In poor weather Red Screes can be a dangerous place to be with the rocks becoming slippery in the wet and a gust of wind could result in a nasty fall - one Mountain Rescue volunteer fell in early 2021 and sustained life-changing injuries during a rescue.

Middle Dodd

Highlight • Natural Monument

Middle Dodd is commonly hiked along with Red Screes, it's a beautifully positioned fell overlooking Brothers Water. Some would argue Middle Dodd itself is actually just a northern arm of Red Screes but it's definitely worth a visit in it's own right.
