Goldener Zweig Spring and Wooden Fountain

Highlight • Natural Monument

A watercourse in the Strailach on the southern slope of the Fuderheuberg between Piding and Nonn, which flows into the Saalach, is called the “golden branch”.

A little above the Strailachweg, a small stream rises from a rock that was formerly called the Golden Branch. This watercourse formed a border point between the county in the upper Salzburggau and the county of Reichenhall, which was probably created in the second half of the 11th century. With the Treaty of Erharting (1275) the golden branch marked the border between Salzburg and Bavaria until 1810.

The field name appears for the first time in a document dated September 20, 1305: The heavily indebted Wilhelm von Staufeneck sells his share in Staufeneck Castle and surrounding goods to Archbishop Conrad IV of Salzburg. These include the possessions in front of the castle, half of the mountain "Stouff" (Hochstaufen) from the "guldenem Zwei" to Oufheim (Aufham) behind the Schweinstieg (Schweinck) and half of the Adelswis.

Lorenz Huebner reports in his description of the foundation of Salzburg from 1796: “In 1646 and 47 one even wanted to have felt a gold mine from the golden branches upwards. But it was soon abandoned, as some abandoned pits testify. ”In the 18th century, Bavaria and Salzburg fought over the legal border and thus a few square meters of alluvial forest near the Golden Branch, as a plan drawing shows.

Today there are spring taps for the drinking water supply of the community of Piding and a wooden well at the golden branch.
