Pont Aberglaslyn

The bridge was probably built in the 17th century and then radically rebuilt and widened in 1795-1796. As with many older bridges, folk tales claimed that the bridge was built by the devil or by the Romans (which an investigation by the National Trust described as "very doubtful"). During the reconstruction, a stone was found with the inscription "W M 1656" scratched on it, suggesting that the bridge is at least that old.
Pont Aberglaslyn is located near the downstream end of the Aberglaslyn Pass. Although the location is rocky and the river flows through rapids upstream, it is not far above sea level.

Gelert's Grave (Beddgelert)

In the 13th century Llywelyn, prince of North Wales, had a faithful hound named Gelert. One day, the hound was left to guard the prince's baby. When Llywelyn returned, his child was missing, but his hound was spattered with blood.

In his rage, the prince killed his dog, but then he heard a noise. He found his baby crying beside the body of a wolf. Gelert had killed the wolf to protect his master's baby and so the prince's heart was broken. He buried his dog here and the small village near to the grave is nowadays called Beddgelert, Welsh for Gelert's Grave.

Glaslyn River at Aberglaslyn Pass

The River Glaslyn flows through Llyn Dinas before entering the village of Beddgelert. In the center of the village there is a substantial tributary, the River Colwyn (which drains the south-west flank of the Snowdon). The now much larger river flows past Gelert's grave before dumping into the Aberglaslyn Pass. This is a small rocky gorge close to the main road providing easy access to the public to a very picturesque piece of countryside.
