Woodhead Tunnel Entrance and Car Park

tried parking here today (9th August 2025) and there was a metal fixed barrier immediately after turning off woodhead pass to descend to the parking spot. Appears to be permanently shut.

Woodhead Station and Tunnels

Highlight • Historical Site

The station was opened on 8 April 1844 by the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway. It was served by stopping passenger trains operating on the route from Manchester London Road to Sheffield Victoria.

The station was later operated by the Great Central Railway and the London and North Eastern Railway.

A new station was opened in 1953 by the Eastern Region of British Railways on a different site in conjunction with the opening of the new Woodhead Tunnel and electrification of the line. The station was closed on 27 July 1964 but the line remained open for passengers trains until 1970 and to freight traffic until 1981.

Bleaklow Head

This rugged moorland plateau affords a real sense of solitude and breathtaking panoramic views. Bleaklow Head, standing at 2,077 feet (633 m) high, is one of three summits on this plateau and is marked by a huge cairn. You experience excellent views over the peat bog and gritstone landscape here.

Black Clough Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

Accessed via a rocky scramble alongside the Clough, this is a stunning waterfall. Please take your litter home if you visit! The place is disgraceful with beer bottles, food containers etc which is sad to see. This water flows into the Reservoirs supplying drinking water for Manchester.
