New Building of the National Museum (Nová budova Národního muzea)

Highlight • Monument

The New Building of the Prague National Museum is one of the many National Museum exhibition sites scattered around the city. However, the designation "New Building" is somewhat misleading. Because contrary to what the name suggests, the building reflects the Czech history of the 20th and 21st centuries in an almost ideal way.
Designed by the architect Jaroslav Rössler, the building housed the Prague Stock Exchange from 1938 and during the time of the first Czechoslovak Republic.
After the Second World War and under communist rule, this function became redundant and in 1946 the Czechoslovak Parliament moved into the premises. The Federal Assembly met here until 1992, when the common Czechoslovak state also expired at the end of the year.
The striking glass-metal extension of the building, which is still controversial among the people of Prague, was added by 1972 based on a design by Karel Prager.

Beautiful fountain, right in front of the Prague National Museum. There is also the Jan Palach and Jan Zajíc memorial. Both were involved in political demonstrations and protests against the Soviet Russian invasion in 1968. On a raised hump in the ground is the monument in the form of a burnt cross.

The Václavàk, as it is called for short, was often the scene of important political events: in 1968, tanks put an end to the "Prague Spring" here as well, whereupon two students set themselves on fire in protest. A memorial at the equestrian monument commemorates this.

Wenceslas Square 19 is the address where Kafka found his first job in 1907.

This magnificent neo-baroque building, which now houses the H&M fashion store on Wenceslas Square, was once the headquarters of the Trieste-based insurance company Assicurazioni Generali. Between November 1, 1907 and July 15, 1908, Franz Kafka worked for the company in this building, undoubtedly gaining the profound understanding of the machinery of bureaucracy that is present in his writings.
