De Eerste Steen Estate

Highlight • Historical Site

The estate was founded by Jan Haak Oosting (1749-1828). In 1789 he had acquired land on a long lease on the east side of the Beilerstraat and two years later he bought a part of the Asserbos across the street. The estate owes its name to the fact that the first stone milestone stood here (calculated from the Brink) along the post road.

Asserbos Roundel

Highlight • Forest

Very old deciduous forest in the city of Assen, owned by the municipality of Assen. Dominated by centuries-old oaks with an undergrowth of heavy holly trees.
The forest originally belonged to the marke van Witten. The Mariënkamp monastery acquired all the property of the marke around 1260. In 1600 the forest became the property of the Landschap Drenthe. The Asserbos was then called 's Landschaps Plantagie.
Most of the current Asserbos dates from the period 1765-1784. W.H. Hofstede had the forest laid out as a star forest, a layout with many straight avenues that meet in a star at various points. On the Rodeheklaan there are places where seven or eight avenues come together, such as the Rondeel and the Zeraam. The Hoofdlaan is oriented towards the former abbey church, while the southernmost avenue points towards the church of Rolde.

The Pond

Highlight • Lake

Trees beautifully in blossom now; in March the paths were still terribly swampy, now everything is well passable.
