Bolton Abbey Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Bolton Abbey is situated in a peaceful location on the banks of the River Wharfe. It dates to the 12th century and is a former Augustinian monastery. The monastery closed in 1539 after King Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of the monasteries. Today, you will find it an atmospheric and interesting place to visit.

Bolton Abbey Stepping Stones

Highlight • Beach

The iconic stepping stones across the River Wharfe to Bolton Abbey were once used as a crossing for lay workers coming to the priory. The 60 stones make for a fun crossing of the river these days. But if the water is too high, or if you just don’t fancy it, there is a bridge nearby. North of the stepping stones is a large beach area which can be enjoyed in good weather.

The Strid

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Strid is a natural wonder, where the river suddenly narrows forcing the water through at great pressure. It was formed by the wearing away of softer rock by the circular motion of small stones in hollows. The Strid is positioned in the heart of Strid Wood - depending on how far you wish to walk the Strid can be accessed from all three Bolton Abbey car parks.

Please note the Strid is very dangerous and lives have been lost. Take note of the signs in this area and stay well back from the edge.

Bolton Priory Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

A really popular place to visit right on the river with huge estate grounds around the 12th century monastery ruins for beautiful walks and family days out.

From Skipton there's a beautiful, quiet backroad route to come here through Halton East.

If you do pay to drive in, there's a fantastic kids/family cycle zone next to one of the car parks. It has little signposts and it's a wonderfully safe place for really little kids to get to grips with riding a bike. You can bring your own picnic too, so all in all it's a great day out.
