Kielder Dam

Highlight • Structure

At the Kielder Dam spillway, three striking stones—known as the Waterstones—commemorate the reservoir's official opening by Queen Elizabeth II in May 1982. This understated art installation offers views of the vast water, the imposing valve tower, and the technical heart of England's largest hydroelectric system. Cyclists following the Reivers Route will find a place where art, nature, and infrastructure converge—a brief stop that invites reflection and a photo with royal flair.

Kielder Water

Highlight • Trail

Kielder Water is the centrepiece of Kielder Forest and is the largest human-made lake in Northern Europe. The full lakeside trail is 26 miles (41.8 km) long and is accessible to walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users.

Awaiting discovery on the trails around its shores is a plethora of wildlife. Rare species, such as red squirrels, water voles and ospreys, are just some of the treats that lie in wait.

Kielder Water Cycle Path

Highlight • Lake

This is a really nice scenic view of Kielder Water from the cycle path. If you are lucky to come here on a clear day, the views of the reservoir through the trees and the view of the dam head are beautiful. This is a good quality path too, a stunning place for a bike ride.

Wave Chamber, Kielder Water

Highlight • Viewpoint

A really fascinating structure: go inside and close the door. Allow your eyes time to adjust to the darkness then watch the waves from the lake as they’re reflected onto the floor of the chamber! Really incredible to see.

Riverside Bench Near Falstone

Highlight • Viewpoint

We were so grateful for some shade beside the water here on such a hot sunny day! Really peaceful and there’s an obvious path cut into the grass from the main walking route to reach the waterside.

Falstone Village Centre

Highlight • Viewpoint

The village of Falstone is ideally situated as a base from which to discover the trails of Kielder Forest and Kielder Water, the largest human-made reservoir in Europe. It is also a good base for exploring the wider border region.

There are a number of amenities, including the Blackcock Inn pub and the Falstone Old School Tearoom. You can seek accommodation at the Pheasant Inn in neighbouring Stannersburn, whilst PoshHuts represents a quirkier glamping option.
