East Haven Coastal Path

Highlight (Segment) • Beach

A beautiful stretch along the North Sea. You can enjoy it in peace as the gravel path is far away from the noise of any traffic. The path leads through wonderful nature which has been moulded by its proximity to the crashing sea.

Signal Tower Museum, Arbroath

Highlight • Monument

Why not visit the Signal Tower Museum, just a stone's throw from the active harbour in Arbroath? These buildings once housed the station for Bell Rock Lighthouse, and the signal tower was decommissioned in 1955, some 142 years from when it was built.

Now you can visit the museum to learn about the region's rich maritime history and importance.

For those interested in bagging the circa 170 cast-iron 'Millennium Milepost' sculptures on the National Cycle Network in Scotland, here's one at Arbroath Signal Lighthouse. (Type: Rowe, MP50)

Lunan Bay

Highlight • Beach

In the immediate vicinity you can spend good and cheap in the Lunan Bay Stays (lunanbaystays.scot/). We got there late at night in the Bunk House a clean room on the video intercom. The caretaker was very friendly and had a good Scottish breakfast.

Ferryden Viaduct

Highlight • Bridge

Viewed either from the roundabout or from the marshes, the Ferryden Viaduct is an impressive piece of Victorian engineering.

Built in 1878 by the North British Railway, the dual purpose structure carries the Edinburgh-Aberdeen main lineover the south-east end of the Montrose Basin.

You'll find no less than seventeen red brick semi-circular arches, all built on a slight curve.

The South Esk bridge carries the A92 into Montrose. It crosses parallel to the railway bridge slightly inland giving great views past this and into the Montrose Basin. Looking the other way out along the river towards the sea you can see the lifeboat station on the northern bank and the industrial fishing harbour.
Running across the bridge is fun and allows you to do a loop of the scenic Scurdie Ness headland from Montrose.
