"The branch line from Bergisch Born to Marienheide via Hückeswagen and Wipperfürth (Wippertalbahn) was opened between 1876 and 1902 and shut down between 1985 and 1997. It mainly opened up the industries in the upper Wupper valley.

Construction and operation until 1945

Numerous industries had settled on the Wupper above Hückeswagen from the 17th century, especially the cloth industry. However, there was a lack of efficient means of transport to be able to transport the manufactured goods away quickly and safely. On the other hand, the supply of coal and raw materials had become increasingly difficult. The growing industries therefore demanded a rapid expansion of the railway connections, which until then only opened up the lower valley of the Wupper (railway line from Düsseldorf to Hagen).

The branch line from Bergisch Born to Marienheide branched off from the main line from Wuppertal-Oberbarmen via Lennep and Bergisch Born to Opladen. The first section of the connection between Oberbarmen and Lennep was opened on September 1, 1868 by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahngesellschaft. The continuation from Lennep to Hückeswagen or to Wermelskirchen (on the route to Opladen) followed in May 1876. According to various information in the literature, freight traffic was put into operation on May 12th, and passenger traffic on May 15th, 1876 (according to the NRW railway archive ) or on May 13, 1876 (according to de.wikipedia.org).

The extension to Wipperfürth could already be set up on December 22, 1876 for freight traffic and on January 1, 1877 for passenger traffic. In 1893 the breakpoints in Winterhagen and Hämmern were opened. The entire route to Marienheide only went into operation on January 15, 1902. In Marienheide there was a connection to the Volmetalbahn (from Hagen to Dieringhausen and on to Cologne) and the narrow-gauge Leppetalbahn (from Marienheide to Engelskirchen).

Passenger traffic was brisk for a branch line, so in 1905 there were already eleven pairs of passenger trains a day (two of them between Lennep and Wipperfürth). Mainly, however, freight trains drove to supply local industries. Since operation with steam locomotives on the branch line was quite complex, tests were started with a benzene-electric railcar, which ran from Lennep and Wipperfürth from 1909 and increased the timetable on this section by eight pairs of trains.
