Tuke House

Highlight • Other

Samuel Tuke – 18th Century mental-health reformer. He worked to free sufferers from shackles and barbaric physical treatments, instead considering such things as emotions and social interactions.

Walmgate Bar

Highlight • Historical Site

The Walmgate Bar is one of York's medieval city gates. It still has an upstream kennel. Inside there is a beautiful café (Gatehouse Coffee) with seating on different floors and on various parts of the wall, really great and quaint. 👍

Jorvik Viking Centre

Highlight • Monument

In 1976, archaeologists made an astounding discovery of houses, workshops and backyards dating back to the Viking age. They found the Viking city of Jorvik which stood almost 1,000 years ago. The Jorvik Viking Centre lets you walk the streets of a Viking city as it would have been in the 10th century. The centre is open from 10am - 5pm daily. Admission costs £12.50 per adult. You can find more information, here: jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk

St Helen's Church

Highlight • Other

That there was a church here in the 12th century is indicated by the surviving font of that date, and the S. wall of the nave, pierced by a later arcade, may be of 12th-century origin. North and south aisles were added in the 13th and 14th centuries respectively.

Bettys Café Tea Rooms

Highlight • Restaurant

Fabulous food and service and well-worth a visit to this iconic tea room. They do not operate bookings and queues in high-season sometimes snake around into St. Helen's Square. Persevere though, it is quite large inside (they also have a lot of tables in the beautifully wood-panelled basement) and the queue moves steadily forwards.

York Minster

Highlight • Religious Site

York Minster, undoubtedly the most impressive sight in York, holds this title amidst a city filled to the brim with iconic landmarks.

This masterpiece of Gothic architecture is distinguished by its soaring spires and medieval stained-glass windows. The Great East Window is the largest stained-glass window in the world. It dates back to the 15th century and is commonly referred to as the "Heart of Yorkshire" because of its distinctive shape.

Whilst visiting the Minster, I'd recommend ascending the towers for panoramic views of the whole city, or take a guided tour for a deeper look into the history.
