The Tree Planter Statue

Highlight • Monument

In March 2017 a group of conservation volunteers celebrated the planting of their 1000th oak tree sapling around the reservoir. The work took about four years, 250 trees were planted each year. This has brought the total number of trees at Scammonden to over 80000, in 1971 there were less than half this number.

The Tree Planter sculpture by Mike Disley was wholly funded by Yorkshire Water and recognises the contribution of all those who have planted trees in the past, present and those that will do so in the future

There are other sculptures by the same artist at intervals along the 3 miles walk around the reservoir.

Scammonden Water

Highlight • Lake

Scammonden Water is a haven of peace and tranquillity. It is located in West Yorkshire and supplies about 200,000 people in Huddersfield with fresh water.

It's a great spot to stop and rest your legs, where you can enjoy a picnic on the banks. Do keep in mind however that swimming is not permitted here.

As with all of these routes, take care. Created route initially as a road bike trip but Scammonden section requires some walking - tunnel and gates, steep gravel paths.

It's not every day you get half way round a bike ride and need to ride under a motorway and then along a dam. When it was built, Scammonden Dam was the largest earthen dam construction in Europe, fact fans. There's a stiff climb out the other side, mind you!

Scammonden Reservoir

Highlight • Cycleway

Scammonden Water is a pretty reservoir in West Yorkshire. With a length of almost 1 mile (1.6 km), it is capable of holding 7,800 million litres of water.

Scammonden Dam, which serves the reservoir, was built as part of the M62 Motorway and is the only of its kind in Britain.
