Kalkense Meadows

Highlight • Natural

The Kalkense Meersen is a vast nature reserve in East Flanders, located between the municipalities of Wetteren, Berlare, Laarne and Wichelen. The area covers approximately one thousand hectares and consists of grasslands, ditches, mudflats, salt marshes and ponds. The Meersen are known for their rich biodiversity and provide a habitat for numerous native animal species, including foxes, deer and stoats. In addition, it is a paradise for bird watchers, with more than 170 bird species spotted. The area is ideal for nature lovers and hikers who want to enjoy peace and beautiful landscapes.

The viewing platform, strategically located at the intersection of the four municipalities that form the Kalkense Meersen, not only offers stunning views of the green landscape and the old Scheldt arm, but also allows visitors to observe the landscape's evolution over the years. According to Michaël Crapoen of Natuurpunt Scheldeland, the platform is a real asset because it offers the opportunity to experience nature from a different perspective. In addition, numerous recreational cycling and walking routes converge here.

Scherenmeersen

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

A route where the landscape takes you, with some imagination, to times gone by. 'Peat extraction'. The many canals are now an excellent breeding ground for birds. Just enjoy the peace and quiet in this piece of bygone history. While musing about the past, we move on to the present.

Molenmeersen

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

The landscape of the Kalkense Meersen was modeled in the late Ice Age by an early meander of the Scheldt. Over the centuries, the river moved south. What remained is a collection of sub-areas, each with its own character. Via an old church road we walk straight through the historic grasslands of the Molenmeersen. Now and then flints turn up here, which in prehistoric times were used to scrape skins or served as spear points. The ditches in the area were used as flax root pits in the 19th century. The flax was laid to 'rotate' here: an essential step in the process of flax processing, which was accompanied by an unbearable stench.

Ter Weiden Castle

Highlight • Castle

In 1868, the undeveloped and deep plot on the Vaartstraat of notary Adolphe Tibbaut (1824-1895) was registered in the land register as a "jardin d'agrément" or pleasure garden, followed in 1870 by the construction of the mansion. The year 1869, mentioned on a facade stone in the right side wall, probably refers to the start of construction. The coach house with horse stables that was built at the same time next to the castle, was extended towards the street side in 1873 (according to the land register archive).

Kalkenvaart

Highlight (Segment) • River

The Kalkense Vaart was dug in the mid-16th century for the transport of fertilizers, building materials, textiles and agricultural products between Kalken and the Scheldt. In the 18th century, even the weapons deliveries for the Castle of Laarne were made via the Kalkense Vaart. In addition, the watercourse played an important role in the water management of the area. Via a network of ditches and canals, the farmers let the nutrient-rich Scheldt water flow over their grasslands via the Kalkense Vaart. Today, the Kalkense Vaart is one of the cleanest watercourses in Flanders, where fish species such as roach, bream and carp feel at home.

You can walk on the Scheldedijk, but also on the unpaved field path below that runs along the dike. It is quieter there on busy days.
